Mons. Álvaro del Portillo, A Prelate of the Opus Dei put forward a suggestion to a group of professionals and teachers, members of the Prelature, as well as other individuals sharing the same ideals, with regard to promoting a University clinic in Rome. The first work group, titled “Pensatoio”, was formed with the aim of providing a tangible response to Don Alvaro’s suggestion, to set up a high-profile institution with a long-term vocation.
The Bio-Medical Campus and Campus Bio-Medico SpA were set up for the purpose of promoting the University.
The Libero Istituto Universitario Campus Bio-Medico was opened with Faculties of medicine and surgery Corso di Laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia and a Nursing Diploma (today Corso di Laurea in Infermieristica). The Associazione Amici del Campus was founded for the purpose of providing financial support to the University.
Then located in Via Longoni in Rome, the Policlinico Universitario was inaugurated.
The opening of the Facoltà d'Ingegneria with Degree Courses and a Specialist Degree in Biomedical Engineering. A Degree Course in Dietetics was inaugurated. With the opening of the second Department, the institution assumed its present-day name of "Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome".
The Centro per la Salute dell'Anziano (CESA) (Health Centre for the Elderly) was opened, thanks to the financial support of Alberto Sordi, on the land of the future university campus at Trigoria (South Rome).
Opening of the Scuole di Specializzazione della Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia. The Permanent Training School was set up to organize and coordinate Master Degrees and professional training courses. Today the Servizio Post-Lauream of the University is also accredited as an ECM Provider with the Health Department.
The then President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, received the staff of the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome at the Quirinale Palace to mark the tenth anniversary of the former’s foundation.
The new Corso di Laurea in Scienze dell'Alimentazione e della Nutrizione Umana was inaugurated, to be followed three years later by the corresponding Corso di Laurea Magistrale.
On 14 March, the new university campus was inaugurated in Trigoria. The new Policlinico Universitario opened its doors together with the Hub of Advanced Research in Biomedicine and Bioengineering (PRABB) which stand alongside the existing Health Centre for the Elderly (CESA). A Radiotherapy Centre continued to operate from its previous location at the University department in Via Longoni in Rome. The new Corso di Laurea in Tecniche di Radiologia Medica per Immagini e Radioterapia was inaugurated.
The Faculty of Engineering celebrated its tenth anniversary by renewing its offering of courses. Starting from academic year 2010/2011, the preparatory Corso di Laurea in Ingegneria Industriale, at the Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Biomedica and at the Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Chimica per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile started to run. Three years from the introduction of the course, the first students of the Corso di Laurea in Scienze dell'Alimentazione e della Nutrizione Umana graduated.
The University celebrated its first twenty years by inaugurating the new Didactic Centre. The building soon became a part of university life and, owing to its characteristic shape, was known to all as "Trapezio". Also in 2013 the University opened its first department outside of Rome: a psychiatric outpatient surgery for children and adolescents in Milan at the Mafalda Luce Centre.
The University Polyclinic obtained accreditamento Joint Commission International (JCI), the independent body certifying compliance with standards of excellence in healthcare. The healthcare, teaching and research activities carried out at the centre satisfy more than 300 quality and safety standards acknowledged worldwide.
Inauguration of the nature trail in memory of the cardiologist, Dr. Andrea D’Ambrosio. Set up in the Nature Reserve of Decima Malafede, the project offers students, patients and members of the public a complete 7 km system comprising paths and cycle/pedestrian tracks.
Inauguration of the new Polo Nido - Infanzia for children aged from 0 to 6 years. Anti-seismic and eco-sustainable, it has been created for the children of staff employed by the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, but also welcomes the children of local families.
The University Polyclinic acquired a new trigeneration plant able to fully satisfy the heating and air-conditioning requirements of the hospital and to supply 62% of the power consumed by the University, thus reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent. In addition, the Polyclinic’s JCI accreditation was confirmed for the new triennium.
Since Academic year 2018/2019 the Corso di Laurea in Fisioterapia has been operative.
President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, opened the academic year which marked the introduction of the new Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Scienze e Tecnologie Alimentari e Gestione di Filiera and the Master's Degree Program in Medicine and Surgery. The new Department of Science and Technology for Man and the Environment opened its doors for the first time.
